Dusvedania(Goodbye) 2008.
Another year ended. Year 2008 has made way for the year 2009. Life can never run out of happenings. Year 2008 was no exception. Host of activities—both good and bad, left their footprints on the year gone by. They all have had some impact on each one of us in varying magnitudes. As we bid goodbye to year 2008 and welcome 2009, few moments to reflect on the year just concluded can do no harm. As I reflect on the year gone by, I had a close look on the events which unfolded during the past year. In the ‘post-mortem of 2008’, I categorised the events of 2008 into two categories namely-- Good & Bad. Thankfully, the ‘GOOD’ were ‘BETTER’ than the year 2007 and the ‘BADS’ of 2008 were not ‘WORSE’ than that of 2007.
So, how was the year 2008 for me? Hmmm………. A Good or Bad would be too definite an answer. Life is a blend of highs and lows, victories and defeats, happiness and sorrow, ecstasies and tragedies. I, too, have had my share of ups and downs during the year 2008.
The year 2008 began on a promising note. I bagged the job of a reporter/correspondent in an upcoming local English Crime magazine. But as luck would have it, the magazine never saw the light of the day due to the paucity of funds. With the magazine being shelved, all my ‘GAP’, ‘PEPE JEANS’, ‘JOHN PLAYERS’ ‘WOODLAND’, ‘REEBOK’, ‘FASTRACK’, ‘ SONY PLAYSTATION’, ‘MOTOYUVA’ dreams had to be put on hold. Sadly, till date those dreams or rather ‘wish-lists’ are still on hold! Hopefully, 2009 will be the year when my all such dreams would see the light of the day.
February to Mid-May was consumed in preparing and taking my 2nd year exams. What a waste! But the toughest phase emerged to be the post-examination period. No, I’m not talking about the results. Actually, the bolt from the blue came on the family front of my life when my grandfather was diagonised with a heart disease. That was least expected. He had rarely been even mildly ill all his life. But by the grace of God, We were able to ride that difficult period. He had a successful heart operation and now he’s doing pretty ok and life came back to normality. THANK YOU GOD & ALL OUR WELL WISHERS FOR GIVING US COURAGE TO LIVE OUT THAT TRICKY PERIOD AND POURING THEIR BLESSINGS AND HELP ON US.
Thank you almighty for saving him. May he live many more years and may those years be the best years of his life.
But life and luck did not smile on some of my near and dear ones who lost their friends and family in the past year. All those were natural but premature deaths. And that made it even tougher to come to terms with the demises of those near and dear ones. May the soul of the deceased rest in peace and may God give their friends and family enough courage to bear the insuperable loss destiny inflicted on them in the form of taking away their loved ones.
Now, on a personal note, the year 2008 was nothing much to write home about especially from the results’ perspective. Unlike 2007, when interview calls and writing opportunities poured in like anything, the year 2008 wore a ‘quiet and uneventful’ look. The canvas of 2008 was a bit colourless, devoid of much life and vibrant colours on the personal front. But it wasn’t ‘all-loss-and-no-gain’. The year 2008 was more of a transition period, a sort of consolidation period during which I got the time and ample opportunity to build and add on to my set of writing and creative skills. Well, how much I managed to progress will be clear in 2009 when my mettle would be tested in the professional arena. I hope I will not cut a sorry figure when the time to show my worth to the world comes.
Moving over to academics, as usual it was as disappointing and futile as I had been witnessing for the last 2 years ever since joining my graduation course in Functional English. As expected, the 3rd and final year of my course was a huge let-down thanks to the inept, corrupt, unethical and thoroughly unprofessional college management. Like the 1st two years of my college life, I had no option but to put paid to the corrupt, maligned, filthy system(my Functional English in particular) I’m a part of.
Surely the year 2008 has been anything but phenomenal. But the fact that I’m still alive living happily and peacefully among my near and dear ones, makes up for all the lows of the past year. If it hasn’t been good, it wasn’t bad either. In as one of my friends put up his words of wisdom--“‘Good’ isn’t the turnout of events as per our liking only. Anything ‘not bad’ classifies to be put into the category of ‘GOOD’.”
True! I take his point of view.
As the whole world wakes up to the new morning of a new year, I join the chorus of prayers hoping for a happy, successful, safe and peaceful year 2009 not only for my friends and family, but people all over the world.
A Very Happy New Year to all!
